Funded by Defra, this compendium of animal health and welfare information relevant to organic livestock production brings together appropriate material from a wide range of recent research and advisory sources, summarised into easily accessible parts for the benefit of farmers, veterinarians and organic advisors. The compendium is an updated version of an original first published in 2000. This version was completed in December 2007.

This part of the compendium contains information of particular relevance to veterinarians and advisors, and includes sections on organic standards, health planning and biosecurity, the responsible use of medicines, welfare assessment, food safety, homeopathy and alternative treatments.

Health and Welfare An overview of the important health and welfare issues on organic farms for the main species of livestock, covering housing, feeding and breeding as well as an introduction to understanding animal behaviour. There are links to relevant parts of national organic standards.
